“The countenances of children, like those of animals, are masks, not faces, for they have not yet developed a significant profile of their own.” – W.H.Auden

This project is about childhood and it’s many faces. Under the guise of play children inhabit an ambiguous space between reality and fantasy, where costumes and uniforms broadcast escape from the everyday and boundaries between the imaginary and the real are redrawn as children donning badges, swords, tulle, tiaras, glitter, spangles and make-up, discover themselves anew.

My camera is license to enter the places where children experiment and explore. I visit community centers, recital halls, gyms, churches, and studios where I find children devoting hours of free time to practice drills and routines to achieving a goal or master a new skill.

I know when I find what I am looking for. It is a calm and quiet not often found amongst children in large numbers. From the gifted to the challenged, it’s where action finds purpose.

A child’s inner life is a mystery, but I immersed myself in their world to experience the collective charge of their dreams, determination and reveries. Performances come to an end, the child digresses into another version of himself, but the photograph remains.
